Austria cemetery removes Hitler's parents' gravestone

The tombstone marking the grave of Adolf Hitler's parents, Alois and Klara Hitler, was removed from an Austrian cemetery this week to deter neo-Nazi commemorations of the German dictator.

VIENNA -- The tombstone marking the grave of Adolf Hitler's parents, a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis, has been removed from an upper Austrian village cemetery at the request of a descendant, and the grave is now available to receive new mortal remains, officials said Friday.

Walter Brunner, mayor of Leonding village, said the stone with the faded black and white portrait photos of Alois and Klara Hitler was taken down Wednesday. Village priest Kurt Pitterschatscher said the rented grave was ready for a new lease.

Asked whether he would have trouble persuading people to let their loved ones share a grave with the parents of a man whose name is a universal epitome of evil, Pitterschatscher said, "I really haven't thought about it."

Pitterschatscher said the black marble marker was removed without ceremony by a stonemason hired by the relative, described as an elderly female descendant of Alois Hitler's first wife, Anna. What's left at the site is a white gravel square and a tree.

He said he did not know the woman personally and did not identify her by name but cited her request for termination of the grave lease as saying she was too old to care for it and tired of it "being used for manifestations of sympathy" for Hitler.

Hitler's roots are in Braunau, near Leonding, which is commonly identified as his hometown after the village that he was born in was incorporated into Braunau in 1938. But he and his family moved to Leonding in 1898 when he was 9 and lived there until age 15.

Leonding itself first assumed cult status for his followers after Hitler visited his parents' grave and the nearby family house following the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany.

The house now warehouses coffins for the cemetery, and Brunner said in a telephone interview that ? unlike the more than 100-year-old grave ? it did not draw Hitler fans.

Anti-extremist groups say neo-Nazis, sometimes coming in groups, placed flowers and Nazi symbols on the grave.

Robert Eiter, with the Upper Austrian Network Against Racism and Right-Extremism, said the latest incident was on All Saints day, Nov. 1, when an urn was left with the inscription "UnvergeSSlich" ? German for "unforgettable" and alluding to Hitler's SS shock troops.

"A lot of flowers and wreaths were deposited there from people who clearly were admirers," he said. "It had to do with the son and not the parents."

Brunner, the mayor, said he was "happy with the decision," and Eiter said most Leonding residents also supported it.

Austria has moved from its postwar portrayal of being Nazi Germany's first victim to acknowledging that it was Hitler's willing partner. Most young Austrians reject Nazi ideology and condemn the part their parents might have played in the Holocaust.

At the same time, the rightist-populist Freedom Party ? whose supporters range from those disillusioned with more traditional parties to Islamophobes and Holocaust-deniers ? has become Austria's second-strongest political force.

An Anti-Defamation League survey taken this year and published last week said that ? while remaining high ? anti-Semitic attitudes decreased from 30 percent to 28 percent in Austria last year compared to 2009.

Best Buy closings: steep cuts. More to come?

Best Buy closings involve 50 big-box stores, 400 jobs at headquarters, and probably thousands more retail layoffs. Best Buy closings are the steepest yet for troubled retailer.

Faced with a stubborn slide in sales at its U.S. stores,?Best?Buy?Co. Inc. on Thursday announced its steepest round of cuts: closure of 50 big box stores and elimination of 400 positions at its corporate headquarters in Richfield, Minn. Officials did not reveal which stores are on the chopping block.

The company also didn't disclose how many store employees will lose their jobs, but that number will likely be in the thousands since each store employs roughly 100 workers, including so-called Blue Shirts and Geek Squad technicians.

Best?Buy, once known as the undisputed discount king of consumer electronics, has been struggling to find its place in a world dominated by flashy high-end brand temples like Apple Stores and low-cost Internet retailers like Amazon. Customers have been increasingly migrating online where they often find better deals, forcing Best?Buy?to figure out a reason why shoppers would need to visit an actual store.

Last year,?Best?Buy?lost a staggering $1.2 billion as it deeply discounted merchandise to keep pace with rivals Amazon and Wal-Mart.

All in all, the company hopes Best?Buy closings will save $800 million over the next three years, savings the company plans to use to fund its new "connected" store remodels, international expansion and digital services. But even CEO Brian Dunn admits the company's efforts to remake itself are fraught with frustration and uncertainty.

"I'm not satisfied," Dunn told the Star Tribune in Minneapolis.

"We have a long (history) of transforming ourselves to be where the customers need to be," he said. However, "I need more information."

For example, the company plans to reduce its retail square footage in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and San Antonio by 20 percent this year. Instead,?Best?Buy?will remodel its big boxes with smaller "connected stores" that focus more on high-level service. Will?Best?Buy?customers like the new format, shop more online, or simply go to Wal-Mart or Target? Dunn wants to know.

Given the severity of?Best?Buy's?problems, however, some experts wonder how long it will take for?Best?Buy's strategies to work, if they do.

Things are not going to get any easier in 2012, said Jeremy Brunelli, an analyst with Consumer Edge Research, a firm based in Stamford, Conn. He noted?Best?Buy?now expects sales at stores open for at least a year, a key growth number for retailers, to fall between 2 and 4 percent this year, compared to its earlier estimate of a 1 percent decline.

Brunelli said he believes there is a growing disconnect between Wall Street and?Best?Buy. While Dunn believes the company should prepare for the future, investors believe?Best?Buy?is better off just returning that $800 million in cost savings to shareholders, not exactly a vote of confidence in the company's prospects, he said.

Indeed,?Best?Buy?stock fell nearly 7 percent, or $1.85, to close Thursday at $24.77.

But Dunn remains optimistic, noting?Best?Buy?still boasts plenty of cash and a highly trained workforce.

"When I see our Blue Shirts talking to customers, I like our chances very much," he said.

What?Best?Buy?needs to figure out is how those Blue Shirts will operate in the fast changing retail environment Dunn calls the "new normal."

In truth,?Best?Buy's?plan to close 50 big box stores this year is probably only the beginning. The company operates about 1,100 stores in North America. Most of them debuted in the mid 1990s when?Best?Buy?went on its growth spurt, said Flora Delaney, a retail consultant and former?Best?Buy?executive. Since leases typically run 15 to 20 years,?Best?Buy?could simply let those leases expire, she said.

In their place, the retailer wants to build more of its highly successful?Best?Buy?Mobile stores and test its "Connected Store" concept.

In developing the format,?Best?Buy?appears to be borrowing heavily from Apple's playbook. The connected store features a "Central Knowledge Desk," similar to Apple's Genius Bar where customers can receive technical support and even take classes.

But?Best?Buy?will face a daunting challenge replicating Apple's retail success, Delaney said. The company must shift its store employees away from a number-driven sales culture to one that offers patient, high-level service.

Whereas Apple can afford to wait for customers to eventually?buy?an iPad or iPhone,?Best?Buy?faces relentless pressure to generate quarterly sales, Delaney said.

"Best?Buy?can't drive that enthusiastic loyalty" that Apple commands, she said.

But the company has no choice but to try. Its stores generate most of its $50 billion in annual sales soBest?Buy?must find ways to reinvent them, experts say.

Best?Buy?also wants to speed up its digital sales, one of the company's fastest-growing businesses, but a relatively small unit compared to revenue from the company's physical stores. Earlier this month, the retailer hired former Starbucks chief information officer Stephen Gillett to oversee its digital operations, including online and mobile offerings.

But in the end,?Best?Buy's?fate rests with its stores.

"They can't walk away from the brick and mortar business because it's so important to them," Delaney said.

Shadowing Dunn are critics calling for his dismissal. Dunn says he pays them no heed.

"I don't give them any time or attention," he said. "I've been at this company for 28 years. I'm sure our strategies are right."

Thirty-three students at a Jewish girl's school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn ponied up a $100 each after they were stone-cold busted using Facebook. This, after signing a contract with Beis Rivkah High School this year in which they agreed to not use the social network, the New York Daily News reports.

?It?s not a modest thing for a Jewish girl ? or man or woman or student or father to be on," head administrator?Rabbi Benzion Stock told the New York Daily News. "There is a lack of privacy and dignity."

The decree is in keeping with Tzniut, a group of laws emphasizing modesty and humility, and observed within the Orthodox Jewish community. Beis Rivkah is a Hasidic school, but this isn't the first time Facebook, modesty and private schools have clashed.

St. Theresa?s College High?School?in Cebu City in the Philippines?barred a senior from participating in her class's graduation ceremony on Friday because she posted a bikini-clad photo of herself on Facebook.

According to Cebu Daily News,?the girl was "cited for violating five provisions in the [St. Theresa?s College?High?School] Student Handbook" which include a rule against "posing and uploading pictures on the Internet that entail ample body exposure," and "engaging in immoral, indecent, obscene or lewd acts."

The crackdown at Beis Rivkah High School came last week after administrators discovered some of their 495 students still active on Facebook, according to the New York Daily News. Head administrator Stock said parents were "shocked" to learn their daughters were still using the social network.

One sophomore who said she's Facebook friends with her mom, isn't happy with the crackdown. ?If I post a picture, I don?t just send it to everybody," Sarah Freid, 15,?told the New York Daily News. "I don?t do bad things online,? she added. ?I?m friends with my mom.?

All 33 girls were asked to delete their accounts by the end of the week, but they'll get their $100 back at the end of the year.?

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Nnemkadi Ogwumike will end her sensational senior season right where she has the rest: at the Final Four.

Ogwumike made it happen on both ends of the floor with 29 points and nine rebounds Monday night despite constant double-teams, sending top-seeded Stanford past No. 2 seed Duke 81-69 in the Fresno Regional final for the Cardinal's fifth straight Final Four berth.

Little sister, Chiney, did plenty to seal the Denver trip, too ? along with everybody else. Chiney Ogwumike grabbed 17 rebounds to go with 12 points and freshman Amber Orrange came through with 13 points and four assists as the Cardinal extended their school-record winning streak to 32 games.

Nneka Ogwumike is headed back to the Final Four in her NCAA tournament farewell with that elusive championship still in reach. Stanford (35-1), looking for the program's first title since 1992, will play Sunday night against Brittney Griner and unbeaten Baylor (38-0) at the Pepsi Center.

Chelsea Gray had 23 points, four rebounds and four assists and Shay Selby scored 11 in her final college game for Duke (27-6), which fell short of reaching the program's first Final Four since 2006. The Blue Devils never got clicking on offense the way they had in their three NCAA wins.

The projected No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, Nneka Ogwumike scored in the paint, on the perimeter, on leaping putbacks and even by knocking down a pretty 10-foot turnaround jumper late in the first half as the Cardinal built a comfortable 40-25 lead at the break.

Stanford boasted a strong rooting section that made the three-hour trip from the Bay Area to the Save Mart Center, including Cardinal football coach David Shaw and his wife, Kori. The couple sat alongside former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

In a matchup dubbed "nerd on nerd" by Chiney Ogwumike for the schools' rigorous academic standards, Stanford's smart girls aced their latest final. But this group has its sights set on winning two more to make good on the most important test and give Hall of Fame 26th-year coach Tara VanDerveer another long-awaited trophy for the case back on The Farm.

Just as she has wanted all season during a challenging schedule featuring games with Connecticut, Tennessee, Texas and Xavier, VanDerveer got contributions from most everybody in a balanced effort.

Joslyn Tinkle knocked down two 3-pointers in the opening five minutes and also made an early steal, then hit another 3 with 4:26 left that put Stanford ahead by 13. She finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.

On Saturday, Nneka Ogwumike almost single handedly carried the load, scoring 39 points in a 76-60 regional semifinal win over South Carolina.

Gray, with another 50 or so family and friends cheering the guard who grew up about 75 miles north in Stockton, converted a three-point play with 10:46 remaining to pull Duke within 52-44, but the Cardinal answered yet again. Toni Kokenis rolled in a 3 on the other end.

Selby, who had a quiet night until midway through the second half, made a three-point play with 9:48 to go to keep her team close. But Duke missed three key scoring opportunities the next time down.

The Blue Devils switched to a zone in the second half after that same move worked so well in a 74-47 rout of St. John's, but Orrange and Kokenis successfully drove and dished ? and they also handled Duke's trap press. Kokenis had eight of Stanford's 21 assists.

Elizabeth Williams, Duke's star 6-foot-3 freshman playing with a stress fracture in her lower right leg, quickly scored to make it 48-39. She scored 12 points while playing much of the game in foul trouble.

Stanford got a scare with 6:51 left in the first half when Nneka Ogwumike scored on a drive to make it 30-16 and then turned into Kathleen Scheer's right elbow. She briefly went down and took a seat for all of 1:23.

Stanford began the game 7 for 11 and had assists on each of those baskets, and the Cardinal limited Duke to one attempt thanks to Chiney Ogwumike's six rebounds in the opening 8? minutes. Stanford held a 9-3 rebounding advantage after getting outboarded 38-36 against South Carolina two nights earlier. That became a focus for both teams in this game.

Duke was held to just 39.7 percent from the field, going 3 for 14 from 3-point range. That was a big change for a Blue Devils team that had shot above 50 percent in the first half of its previous six games, and went 53.7 percent overall Saturday night to follow up its season-best 65.6-percent performance from the field in a 96-80 second-round win over Vanderbilt in which they dished out 28 assists.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) ? Another victory in hand but still badly trailing rival Mitt Romney, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum vowed to continue his campaign despite an increasingly steep climb to the nomination.

Santorum, buoyed by Saturday's win in Louisiana's primary that boosted his spirit but did not narrow the delegate gap, urged his supporters to stick with him even as much of the GOP establishment has coalesced around Romney's increasingly inevitable coronation. Even in the face of the political headwinds, the former Pennsylvania senator seemed unwilling to acknowledge it would take a dramatic change in momentum to deny Romney his turn as the GOP nominee.

"You don't believe, as the pundits have said, that this race is over. You didn't get the memo," said Santorum, who won bragging rights in an 11th nominating contest but did little to shift the dynamics of the drawn-out race. "We're still here. We're still fighting."

But it's going to be a tough fight, for sure.

Romney remains far ahead with 568 delegates to Santorum's 273, according to an Associated Press tally. Newt Gingrich follows with 135 and Ron Paul has 50.

Short the 1,144 delegates it will take to clinch the nomination ahead of the convention this summer in Tampa, Fla., Romney enjoys an organizational and fundraising advantage over his closest rival. For instance, Santorum isn't even on the ballot for the primary in the District of Columbia, for its April 3 primary ? the latest illustration of how the under-funded underdog struggles to keep pace with Romney's years-in-the-making campaign.

Earlier Saturday, Santorum said he wanted to debate Romney without trailing competitors former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas on stage.

"This race has clearly gotten down to two candidates that can win the nomination," Santorum told reporters in Milwaukee. "I'd love to have a one-on-one debate."

Romney's team, increasingly confident, dismissed the idea and the win.

"Rick Santorum is like a football team celebrating a field goal when they are losing by seven touchdowns with less than a minute left in the game," said Romney spokesman Ryan Williams, who crashed Santorum's victory party here.

Neither Santorum nor Romney, who took a day off from campaigning, was in the state as Louisiana Republicans weighed in. Both men were looking ahead at the upcoming contests, although the topsy-turvy race has proved unpredictable.

"This race is long and far from over, and to the people of Wisconsin, I just say to you: On, Wisconsin! Let's get it done!" Santorum told a sparsely attended victory celebration.

Santorum badly needed a rebound after a decisive Illinois loss to Romney earlier in the week that moved party stalwarts to rally around the front-runner. Many urged Santorum and Gingrich to drop out of the race.

Both refused, and campaigned aggressively in Louisiana in hopes that a victory there would justify them staying in despite Republican worries that the long nomination fight could hurt the party's chances against President Barack Obama. The Democratic incumbent faces no serious primary challenge and his re-election campaign already is well under way.

Santorum's improbable campaign was continuing Sunday, with a schedule that included a TV appearance and a busy day of campaigning in Wisconsin. Aides are looking ahead at the state as a bright spot, as well as Pennsylvania, the delegate-rich state Santorum represented in Congress.

But Romney's campaign is airing TV ads in the state, and his super PAC allies have plowed more than $2 million into TV advertising here. A crush of advertising ? mostly negative ? eroded Santorum's strength in states such as Michigan, Ohio and Illinois as he simply couldn't keep pace.
