Iran military shoots down U.S. drone: state TV (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran's military has shot down a U.S. reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran and has threatened to respond to the violation of Iranian airspace, a military source told state television Sunday.

"Iran's military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran," Iran's Arabic-language Al Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying.

"The spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the Iranian armed forces."

Iran shot down the drone at a time when it is trying to contain foreign reaction to the storming of the British embassy in Tehran Tuesday, shortly after London announced that it would impose sanctions on Iran's central bank in connection with Iran's controversial nuclear enrichment program.

Britain evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats in London in retaliation, and several other EU members recalled their ambassadors from Tehran.

The attack dragged Iran's relations with Europe to a long-time low.

"The Iranian military's response to the American spy drone's violation of our airspace will not be limited to Iran's borders," the military source said, without elaborating.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran's nuclear facilities if diplomacy fails to resolve the nuclear dispute.

Iran has dismissed reports of possible U.S. or Israeli plans to strike Iran, warning that it would respond to any such assault by attacking U.S. interests in the Gulf and Israel.

Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by launching hit-and-run strikes in the Gulf and by closing the Strait of Hormuz. About 40 percent of all traded oil leaves the Gulf region through the strategic waterway.

Iran said in July it had shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane over the holy city of Qom, near its Fordu nuclear site.

Should Presidential Candidates Identify Their Veep Choices Before the Primaries? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Michelle Bachmann made news over at CNN for naming her potential vice presidents and including the always-controversial Donald Trump. Other possibilities she included were fellow presidential candidate Rick Santorum and Republican senators Marco Rubio of Florida and Jim DeMint of South Carolina. She also discussed Rick Santorum as a potential attorney general, praising his grasp of legal issues.

Having presidential candidates declare their cabinet teams is a good idea that should be encouraged. Here is why:

1) The United States president, as chief executive, gets to pick his or her cabinet. Shouldn't the voting public have some input? By encouraging candidates to declare their leadership team early on, the public can offer feedback and make more informed decisions.

2) The success of a presidential candidate in picking a good team indicates good leadership, communication, and political skills. A candidate who cannot pick a good cabinet team, or get good people to commit to being in his or her cabinet, is unlikely to be a good president.

3) A tradition of "bundling" and "team-building" during presidential campaign primaries could shorten lengthy campaigns by encouraging candidates to team up on tickets. America wouldn't need a multi-year presidential election process if there were fewer candidates to mull through. Reducing eight independent candidates to four president/veep tickets would mean fewer debates, fewer scandals, and less day-in-day-out campaigning and polling.

In 2008, I thought that one of Hillary Clinton's smartest moves was when she offered to name challenger Barack Obama as her vice president. While the attempt failed, according to an article on swamppolitics.com, I thought it was a savvy show -- Hillary, the experienced politician, made the upstart young challenger look arrogant.

This election cycle has seen Republican candidates ride a veritable roller coaster of popularity shifts. Perhaps the doubling up of two candidates on a ticket, such as Gingrich/Perry or Paul/Santorum, would simplify things and help stabilize the roller coaster.

Going further, having candidates publicly reveal their choices for cabinet nominees could thin the field by forcing minor candidates, unable to get politicians to pledge to accept a nomination, to drop out of the race. If minor candidates cannot get a full cabinet team they become too weak and unpopular to continue. Only candidates with support from other big names in Washington, the same people they must work with while in office, can easily continue.

Who wants a president of the United States who cannot muster the respect of Congress and state governors? If, as a candidate, a person cannot get enough congressmen to acknowledge that they would join his or her Cabinet team, that could be a sign of a big problem ahead.

It's certainly food for thought!

Biologists deliver neutralizing antibodies that protect against HIV infection in mice

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? Over the past year, researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and around the world, have been studying a group of potent antibodies that have the ability to neutralize HIV in the lab; their hope is that they may learn how to create a vaccine that makes antibodies with similar properties. Now, biologists at Caltech led by Nobel Laureate David Baltimore, president emeritus and Robert Andrews Millikan Professor of Biology, have taken one step closer to that goal: they have developed a way to deliver these antibodies to mice and, in so doing, have effectively protected them from HIV infection.

This new approach to HIV prevention -- called Vectored ImmunoProphylaxis, or VIP -- is outlined in the November 30 advance online publication of the journal Nature.

Traditional efforts to develop a vaccine against HIV have been centered on designing substances that provoke an effective immune response -- either in the form of antibodies to block infection or T cells that attack infected cells. With VIP, protective antibodies are being provided up front.

"VIP has a similar effect to a vaccine, but without ever calling on the immune system to do any of the work," says Alejandro Balazs, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral scholar in Baltimore's lab. "Normally, you put an antigen or killed bacteria or something into the body, and the immune system figures out how to make an antibody against it. We've taken that whole part out of the equation."

Because mice are not sensitive to HIV, the researchers used specialized mice carrying human immune cells that are able to grow HIV. They utilized an adeno-associated virus (AAV) -- a small, harmless virus that has been useful in gene-therapy trials -- as a carrier to deliver genes that are able to specify antibody production. The AAV was injected into the leg muscle of mice, and the muscle cells then put broadly neutralizing antibodies into the animals' circulatory systems. After just a single AAV injection, the mice produced high concentrations of these antibodies for the rest of their lives, as shown by intermittent sampling of their blood. Remarkably, these antibodies protected the mice from infection when the researchers exposed them to HIV intravenously.

The team points out that the leap from mice to humans is large -- the fact that the approach works in mice does not necessarily mean it will be successful in humans. Still, the researchers believe that the large amounts of antibodies that the mice were able to produce -- coupled with the finding that a relatively small amount of antibody has proved protective in the mice -- may translate into human protection against HIV infection.

"We're not promising that we've actually solved the human problem," says Baltimore. "But the evidence for prevention in these mice is very clear."

The paper also notes that in the mouse model, VIP worked even in the face of increased exposure to HIV. To test the efficacy of the antibody, the researchers started with a virus dose of one nanogram, which was enough to infect the majority of the mice who received it. When they saw that the mice given VIP could withstand that dose, they continued to bump it up until they were challenging them with 125 nanograms of virus.

"We expected that at some dose, the antibodies would fail to protect the mice, but it never did -- even when we gave mice 100 times more HIV than would be needed to infect 7 out of 8 mice," says Balazs. "All of the exposures in this work were significantly larger than a human being would be likely to encounter."

He points out that this outcome likely had more to do with the properties of the antibody that was tested than the method, but adds that VIP is what enabled the large amount of this powerful antibody to circulate through the mice and fight the virus. Furthermore, VIP is a platform technique, meaning that as more potent neutralizing antibodies are isolated or developed for HIV or other infectious organisms, they can also be delivered using this method.

"If humans are like mice, then we have devised a way to protect against the transmission of HIV from person to person," says Baltimore. "But that is a huge if, and so the next step is to try to find out whether humans behave like mice."

He says the team is currently in the process of developing a plan to test their method in human clinical trials. The initial tests will ask whether the AAV vector can program the muscle of humans to make levels of antibody that would be expected to be protective against HIV.

"In typical vaccine studies, those inoculated usually mount an immune response -- you just don't know if it's going to work to fight the virus," explains Balazs. "In this case, because we already know that the antibodies work, my opinion is that if we can induce production of sufficient antibody in people, then the odds that VIP will be successful are actually pretty high."

The study, "Antibody-based Protection Against HIV Infection by Vectored ImmunoProphylaxis," was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Caltech-UCLA Joint Center for Translational Medicine. Caltech biology researchers Joyce Chen, Christin M. Hong, and Lili Yang also contributed to the paper, as well as Dinesh Rao, a hematologist from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Rediscovered Beatles amp could fetch $100,000

An amplifier used by George Harrison during recording sessions for Beatles albums "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is expected to fetch 50-70,000 pounds ($80-110,000) at auction next month.

The rare Vox UL730 amp and cabinet will be offered at Bonhams' London entertainment memorabilia sale on Dec. 15.

According to the auctioneer, the amp's connection with the "Fab Four" was only recently discovered when an engineer who had been asked to fix it noticed the name "George Harrison" scratched on the chassis.

Subsequent research showed the amp to have belonged to Harrison, guitarist for the Beatles, who died in 2001.

Remembering George Harrison 10 years later

"Very few amps used by the Beatles have come to auction before, and to find one that was used on two such significant albums is truly rare and exciting," said Stephen Maycock, a consultant to Bonhams.

"Revolver" (1966) and "Sgt. Pepper" (1967) came at the height of the Beatles' creative powers, and are considered among the most important recordings in pop music.

Bonhams said about six 7-series amps went to the band in 1966. John Lennon and Paul McCartney moved to more powerful models in the series later in the year, but George continued using the 730.

Another highlight of the auction is expected to be the original cover artwork for the 1969 Rolling Stones album "Let It Bleed," estimated to be worth 30-40,000 pounds.
