Australian Open iPhone and Android apps now available

The popular Australian Open iPhone application launched today, alongside the first official Android mobile phone application ? giving more tennis fans access to breaking news and results from Australian Open 2012.

Developed by Australian Open technology partner IBM, the iPhone app has been a hit with fans since its first release in 2010 and last year saw more than 700,000 fans download or update their app.

TheAustralian Open 2012 iPhone app is free to download from the App Store and features the latest news? live scores, scheduling, draws and completed matches from the year?s first Grand Slam.

New for 2012 is an interactive, satellite-based map of Melbourne Park and a ?survival guide? for fans attending the event including information about dining, shopping, toilets, first aid, disabled amenities and seating charts for Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena.

The app contains main draw men?s and women?s profiles, latest photos, videos and Australian Open Radio?s live play-by-play commentary, where users can submit comments to a team of international broadcasters.

The Australian Open and IBM provided the first Android application this year in recognition of the growing popularity of Android mobile handsets. The Android application gives users similar content and is also downloadable free of charge from the Android Market. ?

??Our aim is to provide tailored Australian Open information and breaking news and results to tennis fans whatever their choice of platform,? said Tennis Australia?s digital manager Kim Trengove.

?Each year we offer multiple ways to stay in touch with the latest Australian Open information on the go. We are pleased to include an Android mobile application for 2012, so more fans can enjoy the tennis whenever they want, wherever they are,? IBM?s Australian Open project leader Sarah Cole said.
