Those pesky neutrinos, they sure did cause a kerfuffle. The scientific community held its collective breath when research published by CERN suggested that the little guys had been caught traveling at an Einstein-defying 3.7 miles per second faster than light. Naturally there was a mixture of doubt and excited disbelief, but everything needed to be triple checked before any paradigms could meet any windows. And alas, it was all to unravel once flaws were identified. CERN has finally admitted faulty kit was to blame, with it's research director Sergio Bertolucci conceding "A coherent picture has emerged with both previous and new data pointing to a neutrino velocity consistent with the speed of light." The final chapter in this story took place at the International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics in Kyoto today, with Bertolucci also commenting that, at the very least, the story captured the public imagination, pointing out that "An unexpected result was put up for scrutiny, thoroughly investigated and resolved in part thanks to collaboration between normally competing experiments. That's how science moves forward."

Golf's in fashion for Alberni ladies

Calling all lady golfers: all you need is a partner, an RCGA handicap, the price of admission and you?re ?in? for the biggest tournament of the season at the Alberni Golf Club.

Broom and buttercups cast a yellow pall on the ladies? tourney last week, but Shannon Haggard?s game wasn?t to be sneezed at. She beat out Cross for the Challenge Pin and has already been challenged by Carol Bouchard for next week.

This week?s low gross score went to Sharon Haggard, who came in with a 97. Carol Hastings snapped up the low net placing with her 68, which also gave her the Monthly Medal for June.

The ball sweep went to the golfer with assorted additions on different par holes. For instance a golfer had a choice of lowest two par 3s; lowest five par 4s and lowest two par 5s. Joan Thompson managed a score of 39 on accumulated holes, narrowly beating out Anna Marie Krikke.

Recent events for the 18-Hole Division found B-Jay Harper and Carol Bouchard playing off at the Champion of Champions. Neither were successful. The champion is Michelle McCann whose home course is Glacier Greens in Comox.? This dictates that the final Champion of Champions tournament will be hosted at Glacier Greens next year.

Watch for the up and coming rules seminar to be held soon. This will be a basic rule education rally focusing on the correct way to identify your ball, basic bunker etiquette, how to mark your ball, etc.? One thing to always remember is to sign your score card. Many times that little detail gets left undone and the rule is unforgiving: if you don?t sign your card you will be disqualified.

The computer is open, which means that summer rules are in effect. That means? lift, clean and place are not in effect.

Solheim Cup players will head to Morningstar Golf Course on June 27. For this occasion only carts will be had for half price. The shotgun start will be for 8:30 a.m.

Spotters are needed for the Men?s West Coast Open which will be a two-day tournament to be held on June 16?17.

Someone was after her. And they weren?t giving up. But either was she. She would run to the ends of the earth, if she had to, because there was no way she was letting them get to her. If they got to her, they got to her weaknesses; they got to her innermost secrets. And if they found her secrets, they could hurt everyone she loved and ultimately destroy her. So she could not let that happen. She changed her hair color, her eye color, her name, her documents, everything, every time they got close to finding out who she was. She had been all over the world, originally being born in England. She had brothers, but she has no idea where they are now. She knows they are safe because she wear a pendant around her neck, her brothers have identical matches, and as long as they are okay, the stone in the pendant will be blue, but when it turns red, something is seriously wrong.

This month she was staying in a small town in Greece. She was sleeping in a barn at night and during the day she worked by the shipyard, selling fruit. The locals were nice enough not to bother her or ask too many questions. She found that where ever she went, the children always flocked to her, wanting her to tell stories, or to play games with them or do their hair. She didn?t mind, traveling so much got lonely. ICE Computer's modular xPC returns to Computex in working-prototype form, we go hands-on (video)

From one year to the next, we see many of the same characters make an appearance at the same trade shows -- this week, it's Taipei's Computex, and today, we're back to visit ICE Computer. What last year was known as "Trinity" and hadn't progressed beyond the mock-up stage has returned for 2012 as xPC -- a working prototype of the company's modular computer concept. Internet Communication Entertainment, abbreviated as ICE, envisions xPC being the only computer you'll need. The device itself is barely larger than a smartphone, and would contain either an Intel, AMD or Tegra chipset, 2 gigs of RAM, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a 1.3- or 2-megapixel webcam and a 32 or 64GB SSD -- all in a package that weighs in at approximately 50 grams. The sample we saw today was so light that we first mistook it for a plastic shell, yet it powered a typical desktop setup, complete with a monitor (HDTV), keyboard and mouse.

The current prototype doesn't include a cooling infrastructure, so it was limited to a low-power 1.5GHz Intel Atom CPU for the time being. All of the company's various enclosures will feature built-in fans, however, opening the concept up to a variety of configurations. The xPC doesn't function on its own -- instead, you dock it within a variety of accessories, such as the xDock, which would sit permanently on a desk or in a home theater cabinet and includes HDMI input and output, speakers, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, Ethernet, SATA and several other connectors. The xTop is the portable variant, offering many of the same connectivity options, but on a smaller scale. Finally, there's the xPad, which brings 9.7- or 10.1-inch touchscreen control to the xPC in a tablet form-factor, yet still includes a bevy of connectivity, along with a webcam and battery.

There's also an xPhone (think PadFone) concept, that packs all of the xPC's functionality into a device that doubles as a smartphone -- the California-based company didn't have any mock-ups to speak of there, however. ICE expects to ship the xPC and xDock by the end of this year, with the computer module itself ranging in price from $100 to $250 depending on how you opt to configure it. The xPad could ship late this year or sometime in early 2013, with pricing to be announced. For now, the xPhone remains a concept, without any functional prototypes or even a mock-up to speak of. ICE representatives suggested that the company may partner with a smartphone manufacturer to develop that last component, so we have no idea if or when that may come to market. All in all, it's a solid (and, thanks to PadFone, proven) concept -- you can get a closer look in our hands-on after the break.

What is Health Psychology? - Definition | What is psychology?

Health psychology can be defined as the study of how biological, environmental, psychological and sociocultural factors influence health, healthcare and illness. To fully understand the nature of health psychology, though, one must first understand what is meant by the term ?health.? The most widely cited definition of health is that which was proposed by the World Health Organization (1946, cited in Pitts, 2001): ?Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity? (p. 4). In keeping with this definition, the goal of health psychologists is twofold. On one hand, they aim to prevent and manage illness and disease but they are also interested in promoting and maintaining overall health and well-being ? physical, mental and social. According to Matarazzo (1980, cited in Pitts, 2001), health psychologists are also interested in ?the identification of etiologic and diagnostic correlates of health, illness and related dysfunction, and the analysis and improvement of the health care system and health policy formation? (p. 4).

Health psychologists apply psychological theories and methods in order to understand those factors which help people to remain healthy, cope with their illnesses or recover from them. Instead of adopting a strictly biological view of illness, health psychologists recognize that many forms of illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, HIV/AIDS, and cancer, are triggered and/or exacerbated by psychological and social factors. They therefore embrace a biopsychosocial view of illness ? biological factors include inherited conditions, personality characteristics and physiological make-up; psychological factors involve one?s thoughts, feelings and behaviours; ?and social factors may include one?s level of social support as well as family and cultural values.

Health psychologists engage in a wide range of activities related to their overall aim.? They may assist in reducing stress and risky sexual behaviour, developing and implementing weight management programmes, improving one?s diet, managing pain, preventing injuries, overcoming drug addictions and improving adherence to medical advice. Health psychologists may practice in healthcare settings, serve as lecturers in psychology programs or work as researchers in universities or government agencies.

NY governor seeks changes in state marijuana law

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced new legislation to decriminalize public possession of small amounts of marijuana, lowering the penalty from a misdemeanor to a non-criminal offense.

The measure - which strikes indirectly at the New York Police Department's controversial stop and frisk program - seeks to eliminate a nuance in state law that differentiates between public and private possession of the drug.

At present, first time offenders who are found to be carrying less than 25 grams of marijuana on their person are supposed to be issued a non-criminal violation ticket, similar to a traffic ticket, while those observed to be openly displaying a small amount of the drug - in an upturned palm, for instance - are often arrested on a misdemeanor criminal charge.

But critics of the NYPD's stop and frisk program say minority residents in high-crime areas are routinely arrested and charged criminally, following stops and searches by police that turn up small amounts of the drug in their pockets.

Those arrest records can turn up in background searches by landlords, employees and colleges, drug policy analysts said.

Misdemeanor marijuana arrests have skyrocketed in New York City in recent years, from about 2,000 a year in 1990 to more than 50,000 annually in 2010 and 2011.

Summons vs arrest
Last year, police arrested 6,000 people in Manhattan alone for plain-view marijuana possession and they would have got a summons instead of being arrested under the proposed changes to the law, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said.

"The human costs to each defendant charged with a misdemeanor are serious. And the drain of resources in our office and the NYPD to process those 6,000 cases is significant," Vance said.

Cuomo called the move to lower the penalty "long overdue" and said it would address a "blatant inconsistency in the way we deal with small amounts of marijuana possession."

"This is an issue that disproportionately affects young people," Cuomo said. "They wind up with a permanent stain on their record for something that would otherwise be a violation. The charge makes it more difficult for them to find a job.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly both expressed support for Cuomo's plan Monday.

Last September, Kelly issued a department-wide directive to stop arresting people for possessing small amounts of marijuana, unless the drug was displayed in plain view. But arrest rates did not drop significantly, according to drug policy analysts.

Mayor Bloomberg said in a statement on Monday morning that Cuomo's measure "strikes the right balance by ensuring that the NYPD will continue to have the tools it needs to maintain public safety - including making arrests for selling or smoking marijuana."

Advocates of a change in New York State's marijuana laws said the measure is sensible.

"The police would not be inhibited in any way from confiscating marijuana, and they could still take an individual down to the precinct, and if someone were to continue to possess marijuana, a judge would still have the option for a jail sanction,'' said Gabriel Sayegh, New York state director of the Drug Policy Alliance, an advocacy group that studies drug arrest data and lobbies for changes in state drug laws.

"But the possession alone, as opposed to the public smoking of marijuana, could no longer be cause for a misdemeanor criminal charge."

In 2010 and 2011, marijuana possession arrests accounted for one in every seven arrests, more than for any other offense, according to Sayegh. Misdemeanor marijuana arrests have hovered between about 29,000 and 52,000 every year since 1998, according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Poll: Political independents outweigh partisans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Call it a pox on both the Republican and Democratic houses.

More Americans now call themselves politically independent than at any point in the last 75 years, according to a new poll. The survey also shows that those who do align themselves with a party are more ideological and have become more polarized than at any point in the last 25 years, particularly on issues important in this year's presidential and congressional campaigns.

Party loyalty, however, only goes so far; neither Republicans nor Democrats say their own party is doing a good job standing up for its traditional positions.

Five months before the November elections, the Pew Research Center poll released Monday sheds light on how the electorate feels about the nation's two major political parties. And sour seems to be an understatement.

The results indicate a collective thumbs down to both the Democratic and Republican Party, showing that an unprecedented 38 percent of adults rejected both parties and call themselves independents. Only 32 percent now say they are Democrats and 24 percent now call themselves Republicans.

This flight away from the two major political parties began in 2008, a time of intense partisanship as President Barack Obama battled Republican Sen. John McCain for the White House.

Then as now, independent voters are a critical constituency that candidates must win over to prevail in competitive general elections.

Exit polls show these voters have sided with the winning candidate in all but two of the past 10 presidential elections. Independents broke for Obama, 52 percent to 44 percent for McCain four years ago. And recent polling suggests independents are about evenly divided now between Obama and Mitt Romney, his likely Republican rival.

Independent voters also have been on the winning side in congressional contests eight out of nine times since the 1994 election, when Republicans took control of the House for the first time in 40 years.

So both Republicans and Democrats are making serious plays to win them over.

The survey found that the face of the independent voter also is changing, posing challenges for Democrats.

More Hispanic and younger voters ? key Democratic voting blocs ? say they are politically independent and Republicans are aggressively courting them.

Hispanics who describe themselves as independents have jumped from 31 percent in 2006 to 46 percent now. And nearly half of Americans born since 1981 now say they are independents.

To be sure, 56 percent of Americans still identify themselves as a member of either the Democratic or the Republican parties.

But the parties are pushing out those in the ideological middle.

The vast majority of Republicans, 68 percent, say they are conservative, up from 60 percent in 2000. And the conservative Democrat has become scarce as the share of self-described liberals in the party has grown 10 points since 2000, from 28 percent to 38 percent. As the moderates abandon both parties, the poll finds partisans' views on the major issues in this year's campaign have become more deeply polarized since the Pew Center first measured those views in 1987.

The poll measured opinions on 48 different questions about basic political values, and found Democrats and Republicans farther apart than at any point since 1987.

The sharpest differences between partisans fall mostly on the issues at the core of this year's campaign regarding government's role and effectiveness: whether regulation helps or hurts business, how involved government should be in people's lives and whether government programs are effective or wasteful. Sharp differences also centered on the question of how much of a "social safety net" government should provide ? whether government should make sure every citizen's basic needs are met or take care of those in need even if it means more debt.

Shifting opinions on these issues are not limited to core partisans: Independents who lean toward either Republicans or Democrats are also more sharply polarized from each other than they were 25 years ago, particularly on how much government should do and how effective it is.

Obama holds a slim edge over Romney in the poll, 49 percent to 45 percent, among registered voters, and the results suggest the sharpest divides between Romney and Obama supporters are over the role and effectiveness of government.

About one-fourth of voters are "swing voters," or those who are not firmly committed to a candidate. Ideologically, this group is closer to Romney on the social safety net, but closer to Obama on social issues and questions about labor unions. They fall about evenly between the two on the role of government.

The poll also found a liberal shift on social issues in recent decades, with fewer saying they hold old-fashioned values about family and marriage, or the role of women.

The Pew Research Center 2012 Values Survey was conducted by telephone April 4-15 among a random national sample of 3,008 adults. Interviews were conducted by live interviews and respondents were reached on landline and cellular telephones. The margin of sampling error for results based on all interviews is plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

We're live from Computex 2012 in Taipei!

Thomas Dolby's Wild Ride

The exterior of the Canal Room is a touch jarring in the harsh light of day. The street-level windows of the TriBeCa brick building are plastered with giant, neon posters advertising the venue's reoccurring theme nights - events with names like "Back to the Eighties Show featuring RUBIX KUBE: The Ultimate '80s Tribute Band" and "Saved By The '90s: A Party with The Bayside Tigers." Checkerboard backgrounds and pictures of Screech abound. And for a moment, I'm worried for Thomas Dolby. It's hard not to entertain images of the singer being tortured with Teddy Ruxpins, forced to perform 30-year-old songs for a crowd of middle-aged showgoers squeezed into their prom dresses, in defiance of all laws of physics.

Things are much less troubling inside, however. The lights are dim and there's no neon to be seen - and while Dolby himself is MIA a few hours ahead of the show, a pair of dancers run around the space all steampunked out in corsets and high-heeled boots. One spots our photographer and asks whether we're there to "shoot the belly dancer." It's an interaction I can't help but relate to Dolby when he finally arrives, off-handedly comparing the whole thing to a traveling circus of sorts. "Actually," he responds, "it's quite simple compared to some other show. There's no video here, only three musicians, so this is the simple version."

This is the scaled-back version of Dolby's live show in 2012. For one thing, the tour had to leave its chrome 1930s-era trailer back in Jersey. Apparently it's just too difficult to get a giant time capsule through the Holland Tunnel. In its absence, Dolby describes the vehicle as appearing to have been "modified by Jules Verne and Nikola Tesla," adding that it "houses a video suite, which allows anybody from the public to shoot a 30-second message to the future. So, we've got a YouTube channel called Time Capsule TV and people are uploading these messages that they shoot in the time capsule and the most popular ones, based on the views and so on, we'll sort of preserve for posterity, for the future."
